Poster Line: "Abiola win across all lines for 1993. Dem cancel am because e work. Your empty pocket na the receipt."
The Story
Kunle Adewale dey 29 years old for 1993. E dey work as technician for Nigerian Television Authority for Ikeja. E dey earn 1,200 naira per month. E dey pay 350 naira rent. E dey send 200 naira go house to her mama for Ekiti. E no save anything. But e believe.
On June 12, 1993, Kunle wake by 4 a.m. E no need alarm. The neighborhood don dey move already. E baff with cold water, chop stale bread, and waka go her polling unit for St. John's School, Ojota. E arrive by 5:45 a.m. The queue don stretch around the block.
E wait six hours.
The sun climb. The line barely move. By 10:30 a.m., one man faint two places before am. No ambulance come. The man neighbors carry am go one shed. The line continue. Dis no be patience. Dis be hunger for something wey never happen before.
By 11:47 a.m., Kunle finally thumbprint. E choose Option A — Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola. E no choose am because Abiola be Yoruba. E choose am because Abiola don campaign for Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba. Because Abiola running mate na Northern Muslim. Because Abiola message simple: "Farewell to Poverty."
Kunle waka home dey smile. E no know say dem don already mark her vote for erasure.
The results come in state by state. Abiola win Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Lagos, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Abia, Plateau, Taraba, Kaduna, Katsina, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, and Jigawa. Nineteen states. E win across ethnic lines. E win across religious lines. Her Muslim-Muslim ticket win predominantly Christian states. Her Southern base deliver, and her Northern outreach work.
The final tally: 8,341,309 votes for Abiola. 5,952,087 for Bashir Tofa. Abiola win 58.36 percent of the vote. E win 19 of Nigeria 30 states. E cross the required two-thirds threshold. E be president-elect for everything except announcement.
Then June 23 come.
Ibrahim Babangida no announce the cancellation herself. E send press release through the Director General of National Electoral Commission, Professor Humphrey Nwosu. Dem "annul" the election. No reason dem give. No legal basis dem offer. Just cancel am.
The word no capture the violence of am. Your pikin pass exam. The examiner burn the results. Your candidate win. The referee dissolve the league. Annulment sound like legal procedure. Na coup against counting.
Kunle no chop for two days. E go work on June 24 and dey stare equipment wey e no fit operate. Her colleague, one Hausa man named Ibrahim from Kano, find am dey cry for storeroom. Ibrahim self don vote for Abiola. "Dem no cancel election," Ibrahim talk. "Dem cancel us."
E dey right. Dem no cancel because Abiola lose. Dem cancel because Abiola win across all lines. One Yoruba Muslim winning Christian states. One Southern candidate winning Northern states. One Muslim-Muslim ticket winning everywhere. Dis dangerous. Dis prove say Nigerians fit vote as citizens, no be as tribes. If dat one happen once, e fit happen again. If e happen again, the Division Device fit break. If the Division Device break, citizens fit realize their collective power.
Dem no allow Abiola take office. On November 17, 1993, Sani Abacha seize power for palace coup. The hope of June 12 become the horror of Abacha. The NADECO movement launch, dey demand validation of the election. Abiola imprison for 1994. E die for custody on July 7, 1998, the day before dem schedule to release am.
Kunle dey 61 now. E retire from NTA for 2019. Her pension dey come for irregular pulses. Her nephew Dele dey 24. Dele graduate from Lagos State University for 2025 with degree for computer science. E dey drive Uber. E never get one job interview.
Last December, Kunle tell Dele the June 12 story. E show am her thumb, still marked by the same line wey touch that ballot paper thirty-two years ago. "You go vote for 2027?" Kunle ask.
Dele calculate silently. The polling unit dey 45 minutes away by bus. The bus cost 800 naira each way. E go lose half day of Uber earnings. Dat na roughly 8,000 naira for lost income. Plus transport. Plus the risk of violence. Plus the certainty say someone go rig am anyhow.
"I go think about am," Dele talk.
E no go vote.
Transport win. Belief lose. The Forgetting Engine hum. The Uselessness Illusion score another victory.
But Dele no know wetin Kunle know. Kunle know wetin e dey feel like when your vote actually threaten power. E know say the cancellation of June 12 no be proof say voting useless. Na proof say voting dangerous — dangerous to those wey wan make you divided, passive, and forgotten.
The Fact
The June 12, 1993 presidential election na the most transparent for Nigerian history. No be because of technology. Because of method.
The electoral commission use Option A4. Dis one mean open ballot voting. You dey queue behind the symbol of your chosen candidate. Your neighbors dey see your choice. Your community dey witness your stand. No secret ballot to manipulate. No room for ghost voters when the ghosts gats stand for physical lines.
The system na design for transparency, no be convenience. And e work.
Moshood Abiola campaign as no Nigerian politician don campaign since. E learn Hausa make e fit talk directly to Northern voters. E retain Baba Gana Kingibe, one Northern Muslim, as her running mate. E build alliances across the six geopolitical zones. E campaign on five-point program: budgetary reform, communication expansion, education overhaul, healthcare investment, and agricultural transformation.
The election schedule for June 12, 1993. The electorate na approximately 39 million registered voters. Approximately 14.3 million votes dem cast. Abiola receive 8,341,309 votes. Tofa receive 5,952,087 votes. Abiola win 19 of 30 states. E meet the constitutional requirement of majority of votes and at least two-thirds of the states.
The annulment come on June 23, 1993. Babangida don already sign decree give herself power to void any election. E use am. Officially, dem cancel the election because of "irregularities." Dem never document any specific irregularities. The real reason documented later by insiders: one Northern military faction refuse to accept Southern president, even one wey win Northern votes.
The NADECO movement launch in response. Led by Anthony Enahoro, Abraham Adesanya, Bola Tinubu, and others, NADECO demand the de-annulment of June 12 and the installation of Abiola as president. The movement sustain pressure through protests, international lobbying, and constitutional agitation from 1994 to 1999.
Abiola declare herself president on June 11, 1994. Dem arrest am on charges of treason and imprison am. E remain for detention for four years. E die on July 7, 1998, shortly after the death of Sani Abacha. The official cause na heart attack. The unofficial cause na one generation stolen future.
Olusegun Obasanjo release from prison and dem elect am president for 1999. E no validate June 12. Dem never declare official winner. The election wey work dem erase am from the record books. The election wey prove say Nigerians fit vote as citizens dem treat am like e never happen.
E take 25 years before any official recognition. For 2018, President Muhammadu Buhari declare June 12 Democracy Day, dey replace May 29. But to declare holiday no be the same as to declare winner. Structural recognition never come.
June 12 remain unresolved because the forces wey cancel am still dey operational. The regional arithmetic wey make Abiola cross-ethnic victory unacceptable for 1993 still dey determine electoral outcomes. The military structural dominance of Nigerian politics, though dem no dey wear uniform again, still dey operate through civilian proxies. The fear of candidate wey win across all lines still dey haunt the political establishment.
Wetin This Mean For You
- When someone talk say "all politicians na the same," remember Abiola. E different. Dem kill am because e different. Different politicians dey exist. The system dey design to prevent you from finding dem.
- The method of voting matter pass the machine of voting. Option A4 na low-tech and high-trust. BVAS na high-tech and low-trust. Technology without transparency na just expensive theatre.
- If your papa believe for 1993 and your nephew no believe for 2027, who win? The Forgetting Engine win. The Uselessness Illusion win. No be the riggers. The machine wey convince you make you no try.

The Lie
"June 12 don settle. Move on."
You dey hear am every Democracy Day now. Politicians dey lay wreaths. Commentators dey write columns. Everybody agree say e tragic. Then dem talk: "But dat one na then. Dis one na now. We must move forward."
Dis na the Forgetting Engine dey talk.
June 12 no dey settle structurally. Dem never officially declare the winner. Dem never formally release the results by the electoral commission. Dem never swear Abiola in. Dem never repeal the decree wey enable the annulment. The military faction wey oppose the election never face consequences. The political descendants of that faction still dey control Nigeria strategic institutions.
Wetin don settle na the holiday. Wetin don settle na the speech. Wetin don settle na the convenient nationalism of politicians wey wan the emotional benefit of June 12 without her structural implications.
The structural implications na dis: if June 12 prove say Nigerians fit vote across ethnic and religious lines, then the Division Device fit break. If the Division Device fit break, then citizens fit organize across lines. If citizens fit organize across lines, then dem fit overturn the regional arithmetic of 1946. No politician wey dey benefit from that arithmetic wan make dis one dey understood.
"Move on" mean "forget." "Forget" mean "repeat." The Sleep Trigger dey depend on your willingness to treat history as nostalgia instead of ammunition.
The 2018 Democracy Day declaration no resolve June 12. E capture am. E turn revolutionary moment into ceremonial one. E give you day off work instead of change for structure. The Forgetting Engine no always dey erase history. Sometimes e dey memorialize history precisely to neutralize am.
The Truth
Transparency matter pass technology. Organization matter pass enthusiasm. Abiola campaign organize across six zones for two years. The election use open ballot wey everybody fit see. When transparency and organization combine, the result undeniable — so undeniable say dem gats cancel am. Your vote powerful when e visible and organized. Invisible enthusiasm na just noise.
