The Story

One rainy Saturday for March, her mama call from Ibadan. "Come sort these papers before I die and una throw everything away."

Three documents. One hundred years. The same architecture of conditional citizenship.

She dey pay security tax every time she hire guard because police never show. She dey pay education tax every time she supplement her pikin failing public school with private lessons.

She don pay more tax than her papa papa. She get less to show for am.

The colonial government build railway to move cocoa and groundnut go coast. Her government dey borrow to build railway wey no dey run. The colonial government build school to produce clerks for their office. Her government dey close school because dem never pay teachers.

Adesuwa put the three documents for her bag. She drive back to Lagos. That night, she post the photo for Instagram. "Three generations of Nigerian citizenship. Same empty promise."

Someone comment: "So wetin we suppose do?"

Adesuwa no answer. She dey read the 1999 Constitution, Section 14(3). She dey learn say sovereignty belong to the people. She dey wonder when the people go remember.

The Fact

For 1922, the British pass the Clifford Constitution. E create Legislative Council with 46 members. Only 4 dem elect by Nigerians. Four seats for 20 million people. That na one elected representative for every 5 million souls. The British call dis one "representative government." The representatives dem elect by adult males wey pay at least 10 pounds per year for rent or taxes. Less than 1 percent of the population qualify.

The 1923 election na Nigeria first. No be design for Nigerians. Na design for the British to manage Nigerians. The winner, Herbert Macaulay, use the platform no be to govern but to demand more seats. E take 36 more years to get dem.

The National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC), led by Nnamdi Azikiwe, win the most votes nationally. The Northern People's Congress (NPC), led by Ahmadu Bello, win the most seats because of the Northern advantage wey dem build inside the system. The Action Group (AG), led by Obafemi Awolowo, win the West.

The Story

Kunle Adewale dey 29 years old for 1993. E dey work as technician for Nigerian Television Authority for Ikeja. E dey earn 1,200 naira per month. E dey pay 350 naira rent. E dey send 200 naira go house to her mama for Ekiti. E no save anything. But e believe.

On June 12, 1993, Kunle wake by 4 a.m. E no need alarm. The neighborhood don dey move already. E baff with cold water, chop stale bread, and waka go her polling unit for St. John's School, Ojota. E arrive by 5:45 a.m. The queue don stretch around the block.

By 11:47 a.m., Kunle finally thumbprint. E choose Option A — Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola. E no choose am because Abiola be Yoruba. E choose am because Abiola don campaign for Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba. Because Abiola running mate na Northern Muslim. Because Abiola message simple: "Farewell to Poverty."

The results come in state by state. Abiola win Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Lagos, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Abia, Plateau, Taraba, Kaduna, Katsina, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, and Jigawa. Nineteen states. E win across ethnic lines. E win across religious lines. Her Muslim-Muslim ticket win predominantly Christian states. Her Southern base deliver, and her Northern outreach work.

The final tally: 8,341,309 votes for Abiola. 5,952,087 for Bashir Tofa. Abiola win 58.36 percent of the vote. E win 19 of Nigeria 30 states. E cross the required two-thirds threshold. E be president-elect for everything except announcement.

Then June 23 come.

Ibrahim Babangida no announce the cancellation herself. E send press release through the Director General of National Electoral Commission, Professor Humphrey Nwosu. Dem "annul" the election. No reason dem give. No legal basis dem offer. Just cancel am.

The word no capture the violence of am. Your pikin pass exam. The examiner burn the results. Your candidate win. The referee dissolve the league. Annulment sound like legal procedure. Na coup against counting.

Dem no allow Abiola take office. On November 17, 1993, Sani Abacha seize power for palace coup. The hope of June 12 become the horror of Abacha. The NADECO movement launch, dey demand validation of the election. Abiola imprison for 1994. E die for custody on July 7, 1998, the day before dem schedule to release am.

Kunle dey 61 now. E retire from NTA for 2019. Her pension dey come for irregular pulses. Her nephew Dele dey 24. Dele graduate from Lagos State University for 2025 with degree for computer science. E dey drive Uber. E never get one job interview.

The June 12, 1993 presidential election na the most transparent for Nigerian history. No be because of technology. Because of method.

The NADECO movement launch in response. Led by Anthony Enahoro, Abraham Adesanya, Bola Tinubu, and others, NADECO demand the de-annulment of June 12 and the installation of Abiola as president. The movement sustain pressure through protests, international lobbying, and constitutional agitation from 1994 to 1999.

Abiola declare herself president on June 11, 1994. Dem arrest am on charges of treason and imprison am. E remain for detention for four years. E die on July 7, 1998, shortly after the death of Sani Abacha. The official cause na heart attack. The unofficial cause na one generation stolen future.

Olusegun Obasanjo release from prison and dem elect am president for 1999. E no validate June 12. Dem never declare official winner. The election wey work dem erase am from the record books. The election wey prove say Nigerians fit vote as citizens dem treat am like e never happen.

E take 25 years before any official recognition. For 2018, President Muhammadu Buhari declare June 12 Democracy Day, dey replace May 29. But to declare holiday no be the same as to declare winner. Structural recognition never come.
